FALL 2019
Join Us for Our Upcoming Concert Series
"Vision 2020"
This fall, over 350 Madison Youth Choirs singers are discovering the multifaceted ways that artists cast an original vision, exploring the way composers have pushed musical boundaries, and studying pieces that employ music as an agent of social and cultural change. Our young singers are always impressing us with their thoughtful questions about this complex theme, learning how artistic risks have created new methods of self-expression and how powerful music has motivated people to fight injustice and come to a better understanding of their neighbors’ plights.

The works filling our rehearsal halls include Beethoven's "Prisoners' Chorus" from Fidelio, Britten's "The Ride-by-Nights," Ysaye M. Barnwell's "On Children," Arne Mellnas's unusual and mesmerizing "Aglepta," Stravinsky's "Four Russian Peasant Songs," and many more. We hope you will join us for the culmination of our semester at our winter concert series on Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8, 2019, at the Middleton Performing Arts Center. See specific concert times listed below in the "Upcoming Performances" section.
Construction Begins on the New
Madison Youth Arts Center!
Construction is underway on our future home, the Madison Youth Arts Center!

A ceremonial groundbreaking event for this new 65,000 square foot space will be held on Monday, October 21 at 2:30pm on the corner of East Mifflin and North Ingersoll, across the street from Lapham Elementary.

The new center, designed by Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA) and built by CG Schmidt, will serve as a creative launchpad for young people in a variety of arts activities - music, theater, dance, and more. The facility will provide affordable, accessible, desperately needed space for multiple organizations. In addition to the two anchor organizations - Madison Youth Choirs and Children's Theater of Madison - over 20 additional non-profits have expressed intention to use the space for their programming, including ARTS for ALL Wisconsin, Madison Ballet, Black Star Drum Line, Central Midwest Ballet, Drum Power, Fauhaus Project, Madison Marimba Club, Music con Brio, Performing Ourselves, Whoopensocker, WYSO Music Makers, Young Rembrandts and Little Picassos.

The  new space features 14 rehearsal studios, including two fully equipped dance studios, a sensory-friendly space, a 300-seat theater, a flexible 120-seat studio theater, production and costume shops, outdoor event spaces,  a community room, and offices for permanent and short-term users. In addition, there will be garage parking attached to the building with a dedicated drop off lane.

Celebrating a Joyous Reunion and an Upcoming Singing Opportunity for Alumni
We were fortunate to welcome over 50 alumni of Madison Children's Choir, Madison Boychoir, and Madison Youth Choirs this past June to our first official alumni reunion. Singers representing over 30 years of our history gathered together to sing with conductors Mike Ross, Randy Swiggum, Margaret Jenks and Lisa Kjentvet, followed by a lively afternoon gathering at the Great Dane. It was SO delightful to make music with our alumni again and we hope many of you will join us for our next alumni singing opportunity, the MYC Intergenerational Choir's upcoming fall session.

All MCC, MBC, and MYC alumni (and their parents!) are invited to join current Cantabile and Ragazzi singers/parents and our fellow choirmates from Capitol Lakes retirement center for three combined rehearsals and a final performance. Our singers span in age from 15 to 97 years old and cover repertoire that will include classical and contemporary works as well as our traditional concert closer, "Forever Young" by Bob Dylan.

Combined rehearsals will be held at Capitol Lakes (333 W. Main St., Madison) on October 30, November 7, and November 13 from 6pm-7pm in advance of the concert on Friday, November 15, 7pm (call time 6pm) in Capitol Lakes Grand Hall. If you are interested in joining us, please sign up here.

MYC to Collaborate with World-Renowned Tallinn Boys Choir in January
Continuing a tradition of welcoming fellow youth choirs from around the world (including Austria, Norway, the Czech Republic, Chicago and Minneapolis), in January 2020, MYC will welcome the Tallinn Boys Choir of Estonia for a cultural and choral exchange, followed by a public performance on Monday, January 6, 2020 at 7:30pm.

Final performance location details will be coming soon, stay tuned!
MYC Singers Celebrate ARTS for ALL Wisconsin
This summer, Madison Youth Choirs was invited to be part of a celebration to launch a new name for VSA Wisconsin, an organization that invites individuals with disabilities to participate in arts experiences across the state. On Sunday, August 25, the new name was revealed to be "ARTS for ALL Wisconsin" and several of our Cantabile and Ragazzi singers came together with members of ARTS for ALL's choir to perform for supporters, community members, participants, and their families. We're excited to develop future collaborations with ARTS for ALL in the new Madison Youth Arts Center!
MYC's Cantabile Choir to Collaborate with Madison Choral Project in February 2020
This winter, MYC's Cantabile choir will welcome altos and sopranos from Madison Choral Project (MCP) Wisconsin's first fully professional choir, for a collaborative rehearsal period and culminating concert celebrating the vibrant and varied colors of treble voices. In addition to combined works with MYC, MCP will present several selections of their own, including "Statements" by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, "Dolce Cantavi" by Caroline Shaw (the youngest-ever recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music) and "Be Like the Bird" by Abbie Betinis. A public performance will be presented at First Congregational Church on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 7:30pm.
Vote for MYC in the Target Circle Program
MYC has been chosen as one of five local nonprofits to be part of the Target Circle Charitable Giving Program! Between October 6, 2019 and January 5, 2020, members of the Target Circle rewards program will earn one vote with every Target purchase in-store or online and anyone in the greater Madison area can vote for MYC to receive a portion of Target’s charitable donation. The allocation of the donation among the nonprofits for each local giving program will be based on the percentage of votes each nonprofit receives during the voting period.

The Target Circle program is free for all guests, and the easiest way to enroll is to sign up at www.target.com/circle or download the Target app on your phone. To earn votes in-store, provide your phone number at check out, scan your Wallet barcode in the Target app, or scan the barcode on your physical receipt up to 7 days after purchase.

After you’ve earned votes, you can either cast your votes as you go (by logging in to target.com/circle or by tapping on your profile in the Target App, then tapping “available balance”) or collect multiple votes and cast them at a later date (before the end of the giving period, January 5, 2020).

If you’re a frequent Target shopper anyway, this is an easy way to support MYC at the same time!
