Synod News
As we get ready for the annual "Called Together in Mission" (CTIM) event, it is important to note that our calling is not limited to an event. We really are called. And as important as it can be to live a baptized life as individuals, we are called together. And this sacred calling is not simply for the sake of being together. It's about being together in mission, living out our baptism together for mission. And it's not just any mission. We are called together in and for the mission of Jesus Christ, into which God's own Spirit is persistently leading us. Keep reading

Church Healthcare Reimbursements
According to recent government clarification, churches may be subject to penalties for reimbursing employees for making payments for individual health insurance policies or out of pocket medical costs on behalf of their employees.

Small employers using certain reimbursement arrangements for health care costs face $100 per day, per employee penalties [under the Affordable Care Act (ACA)] even if the amounts reimbursed are reported to the employees as taxable compensation. Click here for information from ECFA detailing what is allowed and what is not allowed.

ELCA World Hunger's Walk for Water
Did you know that there is a global water crisis? Globally, 1.8 billion people - that's about 1 our of every 4 people - drink from contaminated water sources. Unsafe water leads to illnesses that claim the lives of 840,000 people each year, almost half are children under the age of 5.

Sunday, March 22, is World Water Day. Your congregation can observe this day and impact the lives of those who struggle daily to find clean water resources by participating in ELCA World Hunger's Walk for Water - a year-long and youth driving challenge to support the water related projects of ELCA World Hunger. A Framework for Understanding Poverty
Is poverty a problem in your community? Interested in helping but you don't know where to start?

The first step to helping make a difference in the lives of people living in poverty is to understand the obstacles they encounter everyday. This insight can help provide the support others need to break the cycle of generational poverty.

To learn more about the effects of living in poverty and what you can do to help, attend A Framework for Understanding Poverty on Saturday, April 18 in Marshalltown, IA. Using Ruby Payne’s  book, Bridges out of Poverty, as a reference this 7-hour course is designed to give participants insight into the challenges that people face to improve their lives.

This event is sponsored by the Southeastern Iowa Synod and the Marshall County ELCA Hunger Ministries Team. Click here for more information and to register.
