Music Drives Resilience and Hope in Our
2020-2021 Season Theme, Give Light

This season's "Give Light" theme has so perfectly matched this moment in time that it's incredible to think it was actually planned just days before the pandemic took hold in Wisconsin last March. Born out of the words of Civil Rights Movement leader Ella Baker, "give light, and people will find the way," our theme focuses on the many ways that music has illuminated the path out of darkness throughout history and it has led us to deep and fascinating conversations with our young singers over the past seven months. Our choirs are studying works including "Lift Every Voice and Sing," by James Weldon Johnson and John Rosamund Johnson, the Jewish hymn "Hine Ma Tov," "Here I Stand," Karen Linford's musical setting of words by Malala Yousafzai, "Aurora" by William Billings, the Congolese folk song "Banaha," Michael Praetorius's "Anima Mea," the traditional Navajo prayer "Now I Walk in Beauty," and more.

After a year spent rehearsing behind laptops in our virtual world, we're greatly looking forward to the possibility of a safe outdoor gathering opportunity with our singers later this spring!

Celebrating the Legacy of Madison Boychoir

50 Years On

Last month we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Madison Boychoir's first rehearsal, a small gathering of 35 young singers led by founder Carrel Pray on March 29, 1971. Through her guidance and passion for music, the choir doubled in size in its first year and soon began to perform alongside Madison Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Festival Choir of Madison, UW-Madison music ensembles, establishing a beloved tradition of collaboration which thrives to this day. The choir later traveled to Washington D.C., Colorado, Texas, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Japan, Latvia, Germany, Austria, Poland, Ireland, and beyond, serving as musical ambassadors for our community. Hundreds of young people, including the parents of several MYC singers and alumni, thrived in Madison Boychoir's ensembles through the years, many singing through the transition to Madison Youth Choirs in 2003, when Madison Boychoir and Madison Children's Choir combined to form MYC.

Carrel Pray's vision for a vibrant culture of youth singing in our community has bloomed into a wonderful legacy that encompasses thousands of voices, including the dedicated young artists singing in MYC's ensembles now, half a century later. We're so grateful that our MYC ensembles were able to sing for Carrel and her family many times during her final years, including at our 2015 spring concert at the Overture Center, where she was our guest of honor. Carrel's son John graciously shared that his mother would be ecstatic to see where MYC is now, and we're delighted to see what the next 50 years will bring in our new home at Madison's Youth Arts Center.

Madison's Youth Arts Center to Open
This Summer!

After 18 months of construction and over 20 years of dreaming, Madison's long-awaited home for youth arts education will open this spring!

Accessible, affordable rehearsal space, a costume and scene shop, two performance spaces, gallery space for local artwork, and plenty of community gathering space will soon belong to all of us, thanks to the amazing support of hundreds of donors.

We are SO CLOSE to meeting the $35 million goal to build, endow, and sustain Madison's Youth Arts Center for a long-term future. With less than $1.5M left to raise, we hope you will consider a gift today to ensure that all families will have the opportunity to participate in programming at the center.

A key piece of this fundraising goal supports the center's Enduring Access Fund, which will keep rental rates low so nonprofits of all sizes can afford to use the building's office, rehearsal, classroom, and performance space in one consistent, centralized location.

Join hundreds of other youth arts champions and help bring this dream to life through a contribution to MYA's Enduring Access Fund. Gifts of $1,000 or more made by June 1 will be recognized on our beautiful donor wall to be located inside the Center (see design below). Gifts of all sizes are appreciated and will be recognized in social media and on MYA's website.

Thank You to MYC's
Phenomenal Supporters!

MYC's families, friends, and supporters have absolutely blown us away with their generosity this year, turning what could have been a dire season into a triumph of investment in our creative future. A combination of careful budget tightening, several significant grants, pandemic relief loans, and an inspiring boost in contributions from a wide variety of new and long-term donors have helped lift MYC to a secure and healthy financial and artistic state.

While the road ahead will undoubtedly contain a few curves, we're so grateful to be in a strong position to navigate our next season, thanks to all of you. This year, 28 people made donations to MYC for the first time, many families made a contribution above and beyond their tuition, and several donors increased their gifts to help pull us through the uncertainty of 2020. Your support has provided essential encouragement to our singers, conductors, and staff, and we can't wait for the opportunity to say thank you in person at our new home as soon as that's possible.
