Who Knew?! Checked Baggage
Have you ever wondered how baggage handling works? Surprisingly, the airport itself isn’t involved in the process at all. Individual airlines operate the baggage handling systems. Once your bag is checked and assigned its own bar code, the airline’s computer system sends the bag through the maze of conveyor belts to the correct plane, scanning multiple times to ensure the bag remains on the right track.

When a plane lands, there’s a lot that goes into getting your bag on the conveyor belt and back in your hands. Airlines assign bag runners to unload baggage off of each plane. Sometimes that bag runner is responsible for unloading more than one plane if they land at the same time. Once the plane is unloaded, the bag runner can scan the bar-code on your luggage and ensure it ends up on the correct conveyor belt. There are many steps in the baggage handling process, but they all work together to ensure your bag arrives safe and sound.
