A Lost Connection Repaired through Prayer By Kathryne Stelzer, Spiritual Director, Western Iowa Synod
Have you ever lost access to an online account because it was hacked? If you are reading this online, the answer is most likely yes! Have you ever had a poor Zoom connection or Phone connection? I’ve experienced all these things recently. I had to reset the password on an account because it was hacked. One of my friends was not able to communicate with me at all because a fiber-optic cable was cut. And another friend had an “unstable” internet connection that kept cutting in and out on our Zoom video conference. I felt irritated and frustrated.
All these connections had to be “repaired.” It is very hard to communicate when the connection is poor or cut off. Being able to communicate effectively takes a strong connection.
Connecting with God is really quite similar, and now more than ever having a strong connection with God is what will see us each through these challenging times. Are you able to experience God’s peace? How is your connection? Are you finding it hard to communicate with God? Or has your ability to communicate been hijacked by worries and concerns?
Do you have a poor connection because you are just finding it hard to pray? Maybe you can’t even pray. One thing we can know is that God is still on the line. His connection is sure and true! But sometimes we lose our connection with God. Then “The Spirit intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words to express.” Romans 8:26
I have been engaged in a course through the Center for Action and Contemplation, which delves into the life and writings of Teresa of Avila, specifically The Interior Castle. In the third presentation, James Finley points out, “To live in peace is not dependent on conditions…It is the absolute sovereignty of God’s love being poured out and given. This is the Good News of Jesus Christ! See, this is the freedom of the children of God.” By faith we know that we are being sustained by the working of God’s Holy Spirit in our lives for the sake of his Son Jesus Christ who has set us free. Connect with God today. He is calling you.
This simple prayer has helped me during this difficult times:
Lovingkindness Meditation May I be filled with loving kindness. May I be safe from inner and outer dangers. May I be well in body and mind. May I be at ease and happy.
Then Repeat this prayer for anyone who comes to mind: All those you would like to prayer for by name. Then also pray for strangers, frontline medical workers, pastors, all those afflicted by COVID–19, those in assisted living and rest home facilities, families, unemployed, homeless and the weak.
May you be filled with loving kindness. May you be safe from inner and outer dangers. May you be well in body and mind. May you be at ease and happy. Amen Soul Companions is a group of individuals in the Western Iowa Synod trained in spiritual direction and spiritual formation. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we gather to support each other's spiritual growth. We encourage all rostered leaders, staff and congregants to seek spiritual companionship and growth through spiritual direction, spiritual formation groups, and spiritual retreats. Spiritual direction is currently available through several certified directors in our network.

Additional Considerations As ELCA congregations face difficult decisions regarding when and how they will be able to gather again for worship, this resource offers general guidance. This not a comprehensive, one-size-fits-all resource; it will need to be interpreted and adapted for your local context. In many, if not most contexts, it will not be safe or advisable to gather for in-person worship for some time. National, state and local medical and legal guidelines will need to be consulted and followed. While risk is not avoidable, this guidance is presented with the aim of reducing the level of risk for your community. Your pastor and congregational leaders will want to carefully review these considerations for Return to In-Person Worship from the ELCA.
