Jan Rippentrop to join LSTC faculty as new Carlson Professor of Homiletics
Jan Rippentrop, who is a rostered leader within the Southeastern Iowa Synod and served at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City, and other congregations in Iowa will join the LSTC faculty effective in July.

“We look forward to welcoming our new colleague, Jan Rippentrop, to the LSTC faculty. She brings many gifts and a commitment to mentoring a new generation of preachers and leaders for the church. I am eager to see the ways her contributions as a teacher, theologian, and preacher will invigorate the LSTC community of faith and learning,” said Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs Esther Menn. ELCA responds in aftermath of tornado damage
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will provide assistance for survivors of the tornadoes and storms that devastated portions of northern Illinois April 9. In partnership with Lutheran Disaster Response, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois and the ELCA Northern Illinois Synod, the group has created a “Tornado Relief Fund” to be administered through Lutheran Social Services of Illinois.

The areas affected include Lee, Ogle, DeKalb, Winnebago, Boone and McHenry counties in Illinois.

“The tornados did great damage in communities that are a significant part of our synod,” the Rev. Gary Wollersheim, bishop of the ELCA Northern Illinois Synod, wrote in an April 10 pastoral letter to members of the synod. “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed.” See more...
Hunger in Cairo
It's lunch time at St. Andrew's Refugee Service (StARS) in Cairo. About a half an hour ago, I walked down through the courtyard to see children lined up waiting to walk through the lunch line. A little later, students ranging from 3 to 18 were sitting around the courtyard, eating lunch, talking and laughing. Often, they will combine the beans into one dish and eat communally, as they do at home.

One of the important services StARS provides is breakfast and lunch to all of the children who are present every day of the school year. This includes the Montesorri preschool, Children's Education Program, Unaccompanied Youth Bridging Program, and any child who is here for an appointment with Psycho-social or the Refugee Legal Aid Program. When money is tight, and it is among most refugee families, hunger is a huge problem. In some cases, this is the only opportunity the children have to eat a nutritious, hot meal. Read the rest...

Grace Institute for Spiritual Formation
The Spiritual Formation Program of Grace Institute is designed to immerse participants in core Christian spiritual practices. It is an ELCA Lifelong Learning Partners (Continuing Education) program.

Our main goals are deeper personal spiritual formation and development of skills in leading small groups in spiritual practices.

Since the program does not train people to be spiritual directors, our focus is not on one-to-one listening, but on listening and leading in small groups.

The Spiritual Formation Program brings the same people together four times a year for two years. Participants sign up for all eight sessions. Apply by June 15, 2015. Learn more
