Synod Blog: Strong relationships and pastoral ministry
By Pastor Paul Ostrem, Assistant to the Bishop, Southeastern Iowa Synod

Not long ago I received more push back from a congregation council regarding boundaries for former pastors than I usually receive. This office at least attempts to make it clear that when a pastor resigns for whatever reason, it is inappropriate for that pastor to return to do pastoral acts such as weddings, baptisms or funerals. I often say something like, “It really places your former pastor in an awkward position when those requests come, so my advice is simply, ‘Don’t ask’.”   I usually am asked why that is the case, but this more recent time there was more challenge to it. “I don’t agree with that,” one said emphatically. Another chimed in “Some of us have grown really close with our pastor.” Around the table I could see many nods. Fortunately, I was able to say in this particular case, “I am quite confident your pastor will not accept those requests.”

In one way, I have to admit, it was like music to my ears. A big part of pastoral ministry is about building and maintaining strong relationships. Continue reading...

ELCA youth build relationships with Detroit residents
Wearing their orange T-shirts and dancing to live music, which reverberated in the streets of downtown Detroit, thousands of youth and adult participants of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Youth Gathering gathered July 16 at Hart Plaza. They gathered here before boarding buses lined-up for a mile-long, stretching from the Cobo Center to the Joe Louis Arena, to depart for their service work further into the city.

About 30,000 ELCA youth, adults, volunteers and other Lutherans from around the world are gathering here July 15-19 for leadership development, faith formation, service opportunities and more under the theme "Rise Up Together." ELCA Youth Gatherings are held every three years.

A significant part of ELCA Youth Gatherings is service work, which offers an opportunity for ELCA youth to meet and serve alongside Detroit residents. The value of 30,000 Lutherans, each working an average of four hours per day for three days in community service projects and benefiting local restaurants and businesses, is estimated to generate millions of dollars in revenue for the city, according to Heidi Hagstrom, director of the ELCA Youth Gathering. Fall Theological Conference
The annual Southeastern Iowa Synod Fall Theological Conference will be held September 27-29, 2015, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames.  The theme will be “Being Public in the Name of Jesus.”  A speaker for this year’s event will be Rozella White, Program Director for Young Adult Ministries for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It was previously announced that Jeremy Myers would also be a speaker but he has had to withdraw. Another speaker will be announced as soon as possible.
Here is a short description of the theme: “Christendom is waning and that might be a good thing! The love of Christ frees us to serve our neighbors and neighborhoods. But our neighbors aren’t coming to church all that much anymore. So the locus of work might need to shift from the sanctuary to the public square. Together we will explore ways to make this move into the public square as congregations and as leaders.” We will not be providing childcare for the 2015 Fall Theological Conference. Mobility and dietary restrictions will be accommodated to best of of our abilities. Register online
