New Director for Evangelical Mission
The Rev. Erika Uthe has accepted the call to serve as Director for Evangelical Mission/Assistant to the Bishop for the Southeastern Iowa Synod and will begin serving in this new role on April 1, 2016.

Directors for Evangelical Mission (DEM) are employees of the churchwide organization who are located in each of the sixty-five synods of the ELCA. Their primary areas of responsibility include:
  • the renewal of congregations,
  • education and leadership related to financial partnership between congregations, the synod, and churchwide ministries, and
  • planning and implementation of strategies for mission in local contexts.

Time to get to know each other

Holy Saturday. A pause. A space between Good Friday and Easter. A full tomb and, except for the guard, an empty garden. Still.Silent.

We don’t pay a lot of attention to Holy Saturday other than as our day of preparation for Easter Sunday. The youth group needs to get ready for the Easter breakfast. The altar guild is busy arranging lilies and preparing the altar. Grocery stores are filled. Eggs are dyed. We are occupied with busy anticipation. We have moved on from Good Friday. Even the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night looks forward to and heralds the resurrection.

We, of course, live after the first Easter. We do know how the story turns out, and it would be contrived to be in Holy Saturday as if we didn’t know about the resurrection. But we are given this one holy day to pause. We are given this holy space to grieve, to be empty, to realize that life, as we know it, is over. Continue reading...

Children's Ministry Resource Day
Children’s Ministry Resource Day: Encourage, Equip, Affirm.  On Saturday April, 9 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny. We will have worship, workshops on using Pinterest for ministry, Intergenerational ministry, and a speaker from Spark House. This is a perfect time to connect with other church volunteers/workers and learn a few things to take back to your own congregations.

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., the event will start at 10 a.m., and  will conclude at 2:15 p.m. This is an event for volunteers, helpers, and staff involved with children's ministry within the Southeastern Iowa Synod. Lunch will be provided.  See more and register online
Administrative Professionals Thank You Luncheon
In celebration of Administrative Professionals Day, join us for The Church Administrative Assistants Luncheon and Gathering. Thursday, April 21, 2016; 9:30 – 12:00 at the Southeastern Iowa Synod Center for MInistry in Iowa City.

Spend time with administrative professionals from the Southeastern Iowa Synod— sharing ideas with others who work in church offices. Use this time to reenergize and refocus and gain a fresh perspective on your work within the church. AND – stay for lunch! For all your hard work, we want to say THANK YOU by treating you to lunch and a little fun.

2016 Synod Assembly
While the many reasons to celebrate may be overshadowed by any number of challenges facing the church, we are preparing for the 2016 Southeastern Iowa Synod Assembly filled with hope. We will gather under the theme, Drawn to the Light of God, with an eye toward how Christ, the Light shines in our varied ministries and in every corner of our lives.

This year’s assembly will include election of Synod Council members, Rev. Ruben Duran, Director for New Congregations, will serve as the churchwide representative providing updates and stories of the work we do together as the ELCA.
