Presbyterians Pro-Life ENEWS
June 2013

As editor of this Email newsletter, I am in the happy position of having more good writing to share with you than I have space this month. So, to avoid discouraging our readers with a lengthy email, we have divided a wonderful sermon by Rev. Dr. Mark Atkinson into six parts; each is suitable for use in a Bible Study or Sunday School class session.

A second three-part series on the Medical and Psychological risks to women from abortion is authored by two medical professionals on the PPL Board of Directors: Dr. Patricia Lee June, M.D. and Dr. Martha Leatherman M.D. I hope you will be sure to read all of these excellent articles in the coming months this summer.

Looking ahead: In September be on the lookout for an excellent foundational series encouraging sexual purity.
Six Scriptural Themes Indicating Why We Are Pro-Life
Made in God's Image: Part One

by Rev. Dr. Mark D. Atkinson

"We can be obedient and faithful to God in almost every area of our lives. However, if we are not being obedient and faithful in that one area where Satan is attacking, then our obedience and faithfulness in all the other areas is without value." -Martin Luther

As a people of faith, we continue to address the subject of abortion because this is the area of our corporate national life in which the Evil One has won a tremendous victory. Abortion is the moral question of our age. There are many things being debated within the public square, but there is no other question that is of greater moral consequence and significance. One hundred and fifty years ago the pulpits of this country thundered with the truth that there was no more pressing national issue than the issue of slavery. Today those pulpits ring a similar message on behalf of the unborn.

Health Risks of Abortion, Part 1 of 3
Julia in utero
by Dr. Patricia Lee June, M.D.

"Abortion stops a beating heart". Induced abortion affects the health and life of more than just the baby who is aborted. This article focuses on physical health risks to the mother and her later children.

There is a popular misconception, even among many medical professionals, that legal induced abortion is "safe": that it carries less health risks than childbirth. Early evidence that studied only complications that were reported in the week following induced abortion did show lower death rates among mothers after first trimester abortions than with childbirth (second and third trimester abortions had higher death rates). These studies were misleading both because many women do not disclose their abortions and thus these complications and deaths from abortion are not counted, and also because they do not include late deaths. More recent long-term studies show that abortion is riskier.

Made in His Image
Then God said,

"Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. . .

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

And God blessed them. And God said to them, " Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. . ."

And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.
Genesis 1:26-31
