Join Us for MYC's Spring Concert Series, "Hindsight 2020"
Throughout our spring semester, our nine performing choirs are looking back with a critical eye on the traditional canon of choral repertoire, investigating why certain musical works are celebrated and others overlooked, studying pieces that were dismissed in their own time but revered today, and exploring the way singing from diverse perspectives helps us grow as artists and people. The culmination of this study will be our concert series "Hindsight 2020," presented May 2 and 3 in the beautiful Capitol Theater of the Overture Center for the Arts.

A small sample of the variety of works to be explored: "Madre, la de los primores," the only extant choral work of Juana Inés de la Cruz, a 17th century Mexican proto-feminist composer; Mozart's "Voi che sapete," in which our Britten choir has found a surprising intersection between 18th century opera and modern adolescence; and "The Almanack Catch," a 17th century round examining the cyclical nature of war, poverty, peace, and wealth.
Britten Choir Receives Special Invitation to Perform at MGE Annual Meeting
MYC's Britten choir, an ensemble of 39 young men in grades 5-8, has been invited to serve as the opening performing group at the Madison Gas & Electric Annual Meeting. Britten, under the direction of conductor Randy Swiggum, will perform "America the Beautiful" before an audience of more than 1800 shareholders at the May 19 meeting at the Marriott West Convention Center in Middleton. This special honor is a testament to the talent, preparation, and focus for which MYC singers have become well known in our community.
Construction in Full Swing at
Madison's Youth Arts Center!
With the arrival of spring, construction is back up and running at our new home, Madison's Youth Arts Center! As underground work nears completion, the crew is preparing to pour the ground floor slab, well on track to finish construction by April 2021, with a move-in date of June 2021! The project is in good hands with CG Schmidt Senior Project Manager Nicole Cuellar, a trailblazing construction professional recently named one of InBusiness Madison's 40 under 40.

Thanks to the inspiring generosity of hundreds of donors, the capital campaign for the building (including construction costs, an enduring access fund, and an endowment fund) continues to soar towards our ultimate goal of $35 million, with $31.4 million raised so far! You can stay in the loop on the latest MYAC news by signing up via the button below:

MYC's Intergenerational Choir Celebrates 5th Anniversary with April 17 Concert
On Friday, April 17, 2020, MYC's Intergenerational Choir will present its 12th concert since the ensemble's founding in 2015. Over 100 singers from ages 15 to 97 have performed with the choir, led by conductor Lisa Kjentvet, before an always-overflowing audience at Capitol Lakes retirement community. Repertoire for the spring concert will include "Three Madrigals," a musical setting of Shakespearean text by Emma Lou Diemer, the spiritual "Keep Your Lamps" arranged by Andre Thomas, the jazz standard "All of Me" by Seymour Simons and Gerald Marks (famously recorded by Billie Holliday), and "Veni Jesu," Cherubini's choral setting of a Latin text. The concert will conclude with the choir's resident anthem, Bob Dylan's "Forever Young."

Members of Cantabile and Ragazzi, alumni of MYC, Madison Boychoir, and Madison Children's Choir, and current and alumni parents who would like to join the choir for this session can sign up here!

Combined rehearsals will be held at Capitol Lakes (333 W. Main St., Madison) on March 25, April 2, 7, and 15 from 6pm-7pm in advance of the concert on Friday, April 17, 7pm (call time 6pm) in Capitol Lakes Grand Hall.

Registration Now Open for MYC Auditions and Summer Introductory Choir
We're looking forward to adding new voices to our choirs! Young people ages 7-18 will have the opportunity to join MYC for upcoming sessions in one of two ways:

Children age 7-10 are invited to enroll in one of three introductory choir sessions that will begin this summer. One week sessions will be offered the weeks of June 15, June 22, and July 13 from 9am to 12pm at Christ Presbyterian Church (944 E. Gorham St.) Tuition is $190 and financial assistance is available.

Students in grades 5 through 12 are encouraged to audition for our performing choirs in May. Auditions at MYC are very relaxed, with no preparation needed and no cost to try out. Join us in exploring diverse musical repertoire while meeting kind, thoughtful, and creative fellow singers.

Visit the "Join a Choir" page of our website for more information or to register for either opportunity.
MYC Singers Share Their Stories and
Inspire Support
Our singers are not only excellent musicians and thinkers, they're also engaging storytellers with a unique ability to articulate the myriad benefits of music education in their own lives. Throughout our annual storytelling campaign, "It's MYChoir," our singers have been encouraging family, friends, neighbors, and community members to invest in the future of Madison Youth Choirs, and revealing the eye-opening impact of arts education:

"My experience in MYC has been invaluable to me. In addition to excellent music instruction, the educators in MYC also talk about real world issues and themes that impact us and those around us. They have given us unique insight into the world around us through music." - Cantilena singer, age 16

Many thanks to the hundreds of you who have contributed in support of our singers' musical experiences. Alumni parents can join in the effort too, by making a donation in honor of their child's time in MYC. Click the button below to visit the It's MYChoir page of our website, choose your donation method, and fill in your alumni singer's name in the "donation made on behalf of" field. Feel free to share a story about your family's experience in the "Staying in Touch" section. We would love to know how music education has played a role in your children's lives.
