TAO Artists Build Community

Our Holiday Hootenanny on December 5 kicked off a season of singing, dancing, art-making and joy.  Throughout December dozens of TAO artists took part in programs near and far.  There were many highlights: lots of eager folks of all ages, excited kids waiting for Santa, some quiet elders, perhaps thinking of happier times.  We're helping community members, caregivers and participants come full circle and using the arts to be of meaningful, real service to others.  Read Emma Gallimore's holiday blog here.

Season of Giving - a child's song
Click here to see a touching, 3-minute video that is an original ‘Melodyville’ project song created by children  at Genieve Shelter in Portsmouth.  The project was facilitated by Tina Micula over two sessions; audio was engineered and recorded by Jacki Paolella, TapTap Recordings.  Special thanks to individual donors, the Tidewater Children’s Foundation, the Portsmouth Museums & Fine Arts Commission and the Virginia Arts Commission/National Endowment for the Arts for their support.

Remembering Ann Vernon
Tidewater Arts Outreach was fortunate to have known and worked with Ann Vernon over the course of many years.   She was a special friend and trusted mentor to staff.   Ann loved instilling the joy of art-making, reflection and inquiry in children.  The photo above shows her helping a young girl create a poem about service to others, at a 2008 TAO Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative program.  She also took groups of at-risk teenage girls on tours of the Chrysler Museum for TAO, to discover the nature and purpose of autobiographical art.  Ann then had the girls create their own art, taking museum pieces as inspiration.  The results were eye-opening, possibly life-changing, for the girls involved.  TAO treasured these programs; they helped us define our path of creating programs where participants fully experienced art-making.   Ann was full of life, love and a huge creative spark.  We miss her and will always treasure her gifts to TAO.

A celebration of Ann's life is on Monday, January 11, 6-8 pm at Chrysler Museum's Huber Court, and all friends are invited to attend.  Connect to this celebration here.
