Lutheran Day on the Hill

The 13th annual Lutheran Day on the Hill took place February 8, 2018. 195 people attended, the second largest in the history of the gathering. Jointly sponsored by the three Iowa synods of the ELCA and Lutheran Services in Iowa, the morning began with an educational and inspirational gathering at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church. The keynote speaker was the Rev. Amy Reumann, Director of Advocacy for the ELCA.

The issues participants were encouraged to address in conversation with their representatives included funding for Child Welfare Services, oversight of Iowa’s Medicaid system, and support for refugee services. Participants (known each year as “The Blue Shirts” by those in the statehouse) visited with their elected leaders advocating for those who are often forgotten, left out, or under-served in our society an example of faith in action.

Next year, Lutheran Day on the Hill will be Tuesday, March 19, 2019. Plan now to attend.

We pray that in our Lenten reflections and conversations we are truthful with ourselves and each other, trust in God’s love and mercy that frees us to move forward grounded in the gospel to serve our neighbor without bias, encourage and care for one another as sisters and brothers in Christ, and move beyond any hesitations or fears we may have about participating in God’s work in the world.
