We Are Church For the Sake of the World
What does this mean? In Presiding Bishop Eaton’s words, “We are a church first. And at the heart of what we do is worship, and the heart of that is Jesus Christ,” she said. “We are church for the sake of the world. We weren’t redeemed to just think good thoughts of Jesus Christ. We’re supposed to be out there, helping to bring about the abundant life.”

*Campaign for the ELCA:Leadership
The future of this church depends on its future leaders. Good, strong leadership matters in a church that is called to live and serve in a world full of complexities and ambiguities. We need leaders who will ground us in God’s love and forgiveness and send us out to do God’s work in the world. By accompanying youth and young adults in their faith journeys, and supporting talented, gifted students as they prepare to begin a life of ministry, we invest in the future of the ELCA. You can help by growing the permanent endowment fund so that, for generations to come, hundreds more of the most promising leaders can respond to the call to serve our congregations. Your offering can also help expand the ELCA’s ministries with youth and young adults to cultivate young leaders, lift up the importance of diversity and inclusion, and build a robust network of support for youth and young adults in our church.

*WIS Scholarships for TEEM

We call you to exercise among us the ministry of Word and Sacrament which God has established…to preach and teach the Word of God in accordance with the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions: to administer Holy Baptism and Holy Communion; to lead worship; to proclaim the forgiveness of sins; to provide pastoral care; to speak for justice in behalf of the poor and oppressed; to encourage persons to prepare for the ministry of the Gospel; to impart knowledge of the ELCA and it wider ministry; to endeavor to increase support given by our congregation to the work of our whole church; to equip us for witness and service; and guide us in proclaiming God’s love through word and deed.

                                                        - Letter of Call to an ordained minister of the ELCA

*SACCOS:Savings and Credit Co-Operative Societies

Most Tanzanians have little access to desired credit that would make it possible for them to adopt improved agricultural practices or begin or expand a small business. A SACCOS can provide a small, short-term loan that enables Tanzanian smallholder farmers and small businesses to invest in new opportunities.

The SACCOS groups have been successful because they require their members to have ‘skin in the game’ by investing their own savings to help provide capital for loans. SACCOS members are often able to collectively purchase quality inputs at a reduced cost. Most importantly, they give families the dignity of making their own decisions on how to use the funds from the loans as well as the profits.

In Kind Offering for Houston

Even if you aren't attending the ELCA Youth Gathering this summer, you can participate by donating books prior to or at the assembly! List of books can be found here and you can also order here!! Books can be ordered online, brought to assembly, or you can donate money at the display table for books. Only books on the list will be accepted!

The Gathering has recognized the need to lift up literacy in Houston. Building a foundation of literacy starts before entering kindergarten. Students who read at home become strong writers, critical thinkers, and more successful students than those who do not. Houston Independent School District estimates that 74% of the students in the district come from families who struggle to provide books for their children. This means the students begin each school year at a disadvantage. You can make a difference!!

ALICE or Active Shooter Training
When: Friday, June 8th - Begins at 1:30 pm and ends at 3 pm
Where: Sioux City Convention Center - Look for signs inside main entrance
Cost: FREE - Please register here or below
ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) Training instructor led classes provide preparation and a plan for individuals and organizations on how to more proactively handle the threat of an aggressive intruder or active shooter event. Whether it is an attack by an individual person or by an international group of professionals intent on conveying a political message through violence, ALICE Training option based tactics have become the accepted response, versus the traditional “lockdown only” approach. For places of worship, safety is assumed upon entering. Worrying about an active shooter is not among most people’s thoughts as they enter their religious community. Because of this, church security and emergency preparedness has to be something that religious leaders take into consideration as the day to day operations of their churches are carried out.Presenter: Andrew Dutler of Sioux City
