| |If you had told me in the beginning that four women with four differing positions on abortion would make a four-month commitment to study abortion together and the result would be excitement, common vision, and real sisterhood in Christ--I probably would not have believed you. In fact, the Pittsburgh Presbytery Council Task Force to Study Abortion found their dialogue, prayer and study together to be so valuable, they stretched their 4 month commitment to 8 months in order to offer something substantial and meaningful to the church. I attended two days of the meeting of the Advisory Committee for Social Witness Policy held in Washington D.C., May 14-17. Members of this committee are a hard-working, highly committed, and diverse group. They heard from presenters on an array of difficult topics such as education, climate change, Middle East peace efforts, torture, gun control and more. Most presenters were lobbying for a particular viewpoint on the topics. There were no opposing views expressed. Although time was given for Q & A after each presenter, the committee had no time in the agenda to discuss among themselves their reactions to what they had heard.
Abortion was not one of the topics addressed at the meeting, but the subject came up in several conversations...Read more
