On Saturday, January 27, in towns and cities all over the world, people will gather for a traditional Burns Supperto celebrate the birthday of Scotland's "national poet," Robert Burns with eating, drinking, singing, and dancing.
You are cordially invited to join MYC's celebration of this global event on Saturday, January 27, from 5-8PM in the Fellowship Room (downstairs) at First Congregational Church in Madison. There will be dancing, singing and even a traditional Scottish meal prepared by you (more on that below)! While we are holding this event as a way to "kick-off" our 2018 Scotland Tour, this family-friendly event is open to ALL singers and families in Purcell, Britten, Holst, and Ragazzi whether or not you are traveling to Scotland with us next summer. (There is no cost to attend but we will gladly accept donations that evening to help cover expenses.) We hope you will join us for this educational and festive event!
Robert Burns (Alexander Nasmyth, 1787)
We are following (loosely) the traditional menu of a Burns Supper and providing recipes for you to follow. (Yes! This is a potluck event!) Our menu includes "Neeps and tatties" (mashed turnips and potatoes); haggis; rolls; apple juice; shortbread and Scottish tablet for dessert; cheese, crackers, fruit and vegetables to round out our plates (and bellies). We suggest you read through the recipes first to see what might interest you and then click on the "Join Us" link to RSVP and to let us know what you plan to bring.
We assume most families do not have a recipe for traditional or vegetarian haggis so those recipes may need a bit of studying. They are not difficult and if you have ever made a meatloaf you will be in familiar territory! If you have a favorite way to make mashed turnips or mashed potatoes or shortbread, feel free to use your recipe. Just make sure you produce the desired quantity to feed 15-20 people. (Don't worry, all these details are in the recipes linked below as well as on the sign up!)
Come prepared to kick up your heels! Comfortable clothes and shoes (or no shoes) are highly recommended. Scottish dancing expert and MYC parent, Kathryn Deck, will be teaching and leading us in our very own Scottish ceilidh (dance party!).
Reservation Required by Monday, January 22
We know this will be a memorable event whether you are traveling to Scotland next summer or not so we hope all of you will be able to attend. Space is (somewhat) limited and a reservation is required by Monday, January 22. We will sing, dance, eat and make merry on a cold winter's night while celebrating all things Scottish. Please join us!
