ELCA Bishops support LIRS's Stand for Welcome Campaign
Through the Stand for Welcome Campaign, LIRS seeks to reform U.S. immigration detention policy to protect vulnerable migrants and to ensure the fair treatment of all migrants who come into contact with federal immigration officials. LIRS believes the U.S. government should explore and expand community support programs and alternatives to detention. Migrants who are not risks for flight or to the public safety should be released from detention into local community programs that would provide them with housing, legal and social services, and ensure their appearance at immigration court proceedings.

Bishop Michael Burk, along with other ELCA Bishops, signed a letter to President Obama calling for an end to the harsh policy of family detention and employ alternatives to detention where deemed necessary. For more information on the Stand for Welcome Campaign click here.
Ecumenical Advocacy Days
Ecumenical Advocacy Days will be held April 17 – 20, 2015 in Washington, DC.  This year’s advocacy focus: Breaking the Chains: Mass Incarceration and Systems of Exploitation.  Over 1,000 Christian advocates will join together over a shared tradition of peace and justice so that together we may worship, learn and witness.

The U.S. makes up only five percent of the world’s population and yet holds nearly a quarter of the world’s prisoners.  And the prison population by any measure gives evidence of grave racial disparity in practices within the adult criminal and juvenile systems.  To learn more or to register, visit the Ecumenical Advocacy Days website.

A Framework for Understanding Poverty
Is poverty a problem in your community? Interested in helping but you don't know where to start?

The first step to helping make a difference in the lives of people living in poverty is to understand the obstacles they encounter everyday. This insight can help provide the support others need to break the cycle of generational poverty.

To learn more about the effects of living in poverty and what you can do to help, attend A Framework for Understanding Poverty on Saturday, April 18 in Marshalltown, IA. Using Ruby Payne’s  book, Bridges out of Poverty, as a reference this 7-hour course is designed to give participants insight into the challenges that people face to improve their lives.

This event is sponsored by the Southeastern Iowa Synod and the Marshall County ELCA Hunger Ministries Team. Click here for more information and to register.
