Wonders of Nature Art Camp

Jun 26-Jun 30

9 AM – 2 PM

Join award-winning artist Susan Nicholas Gephart to explore the natural world and to connect to the environment through outdoor painting! Young artists will use their senses to discover the wonders nature offers while applying their creativity to sketch and paint their own masterpieces. Campers will have the opportunity to work with different mediums including pencil sketching, watercolor, and pastels; and will leave camp with lifelong skills to continue to create beautiful pieces of art. All skill levels welcome. Teens must be able to work independently and creatively and focus on both guided and free art activities for the five hour time period.

Susan’s pastel, “Hameau Farm Sunset and Clouds” was published in the July 2016 issue of PleinAir Magazine in the article, “The Many Moods of Clouds.” Last fall, Susan was a featured artist to watch in Pennsylvania Crave Magazine, and this year she is invited faculty for the 6th Annual Plein Air Convention in San Diego. For more information about Susan and her work visit her webpage here.

Millbrook Marsh Receives Columbia Grant

Columbia/Grassroots Alliance Belay Grant Program announced this month that Millbrook Marsh Nature Center will receive a grant for installing a rain gear locker for participants and staff. Appalachian Outdoors nominated Millbrook Marsh for this award because having a locker on site will improve the quality of environmental programs. Millbrook Marsh is a wonderful place to visit during the rain. There are many aspects of the marsh that are even better to see during rainy weather, such as how the marsh collects runoff and seems to swell as it becomes more saturated.

With this new locker system, students that come to the marsh without proper gear for the program will be able to focus on what they can experience in the marsh as opposed to the precipitation pouring down on their unprotected heads. Currently, Millbrook Marsh has relied on cutting holes in trash bags to accommodate students without proper rain attire. Having a store of rain coats will not only be more effective in staving off the rain, but it will be considerably more environmentally friendly. The rain locker should help those school groups overcome the barrier of forgetting their gear, or not having it in the first place. Millbrook Marsh can and should be enjoyed by everyone despite inclement weather conditions. Now, the only thing that will be dampened by rain is the wetland itself. ~ by Kelleen Lanagan
