Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Day of Epiphany 2017

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I pray this note finds you well and at peace.  The text for this day from Paul's letter to the Ephesians includes these thoughts; “and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things;  so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. Eph 3:9-10

I believe it goes without saying that many of us are thinking, and praying, for the “rulers” of our country, and the world, as we approach the changing of the administration in Washington. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins on Wednesday January 18, 2017, two days after we commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr Day, and two days before the President's Inauguration.  I am writing to tell you of two observances that share a common theme: Reconciliation-The Love of Christ Compels us

Over the past few weeks many judicatory leaders from around Iowa and I have been pulling together plans for a public display of unity and prayer, figuring that if unity can be found anywhere in our culture it should be in the church.  Please consider gathering some from your congregation and join me and other Iowan Christians on January 18 at Drake University, Parent's Hall, at 7pm.  (Free parking is available on the streets in the nearby community or you may buy a discounted parking pass here for $2.50, half price)  I understand that your immediate reaction might be, “but that is Confirmation night!”  True, however this could be the type of field trip that might help your young people find more meaning in the church, and, begin to understand that we can publicly witness in numbers with others who are not Lutheran.

The second event will be on Sunday, January 22, 2:00 p.m., at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3012 Jackson Street, Sioux City.  Bishop R. Walker Nickless, of the Sioux City Roman Catholic Diocese, and I will lead a time of worship and prayer.

Your fellow worker in the field,
Bishop Rodger

Iringa Hope - SACCOS
"Last year the regional government of the Southern Highlands District of Tanzania recognized Iringa Hope and our local supporting group, the Micro Finance Institute (the MFI) as “the most successful, best managed program in the country.”  As a follow on, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania is coming to Iringa on January 15 to visit the MFI and learn more about our program.

Late last year the Tanzanian government designated the MFI as being authorized to do training and support for micro finance programs throughout the country.  This is a very unique designation, with the MFI now being the only such group in the country.  As a result the President will be officially launching the Institute while he is there.
