Spiritual Spring Cleaning
ELCA Wellness Manager, Deacon Tammy Devine
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

We enter the Lenten season with an ash cross on our foreheads. It reminds us that our days are limited, and that ultimately God is the one who holds those days. Lent invites us into the discipline of spiritual cleansing and redirection. God calls us to remove the cobwebs of our hearts — our unhealthy habits, thoughts, and actions — and to dust off the shelved spiritual practices that will help us grow as disciples. Much like spring cleaning, Lent is a time to open up, air out, clean out, and reorganize. Complete article here.

The Good Samaritan

In her March column for Living Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton ponders the parable of the good Samaritan, reminding us that our new life in Christ leads us to answer a different question—not “Who is my neighbor?” but “How are we neighbor?” Read her column in English at livinglutheran.org/2017/02/the-good-shepherd or in Spanish at livinglutheran.org/2017/02/el-buen-samaritano.

Chrism Mass for Rostered Leaders
What is a Chrism Mass?
A Chrism Mass is a service held during Holy Week and presided over by a synodical bishop. At this unique liturgy, the blessing of oil is coupled with a renewal of vows for rostered leaders. The traditional day for this service is Maundy Thursday (when some traditions believe the first ordinations took place). In some places (especially in geographically large synods), bishops make provision for several chrism masses throughout the synod to enable all rostered leaders to participate. Here are the scheduled Chrism Masses for the Western Iowa Synod, all will begin at 10 am:
April 7      St. Paul, Treynor
April 10    Immanuel, Akron
April 11    Grace, Ft. Dodge
