Jesus Brings Hope

Advent is a time when I think of a special Sunday School Christmas program.

As we were about to leave home for the program, I remember my parents sitting in the car and Dad asked Mom, “Do you think there will be an offering?” She said she thought so. He said he had to go and find his wallet, and she volunteered to help.

My brother, sister and I waited in the car. It took a long time to find a wallet. But we made it to the program on time.  When we got home, we were surprised with presents under the tree. We began opening gifts and having a wonderful time. As part of our family Christmas, my parents decided to let us open a few gifts early.

I don’t remember a lot about that night. What I do remember is the excitement of Christmas. We celebrated the birth of Jesus with church members and friends. And we celebrated with family.

I hope that during Advent, as we prepare for Christmas, we remember the excitement that comes with the words of the angels, “To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11)  Jesus is born to us and to the world.
We anticipate the coming of the savior who brings light into our darkness. Jesus brings hope. Jesus brings peace. Jesus brings joy. And Jesus brings love in a very real and powerful way. And, with Jesus, there is always a wonderful surprise or two.

Let us pray
. Help us, Lord, to never give in to darkness. Grant us hope in the coming of Jesus, our forever light. Amen

Where might you experience the light in darkness?
Where might you be surprised this Advent as you wait for the Savior?
