Strengthening Leaders Together
We Each Play a Role

Healthy, resilient leaders shape healthy, resilient faith communities. This ELCA core belief explains the enduring partnership between ELCA organizations, their leaders, and Portico Benefit Services. As one community, we're called to strengthen ministry. Guiding church documents (the ELCA Philosophy of Benefits and Vision and Expectations) point to the critical role we each play:
  • Congregation members and organizations are called upon to provide their leaders with sustainable livelihoods as well as time to tend their well-being.
  • Leaders are expected to tend their well-being in all dimensions of the Wholeness Wheel, the ELCA’s wellness symbol and discernment tool.
  • Portico is responsible for providing cost-effective benefits, resources, and inspiration to help leaders strengthen their financial, emotional, and physical well-being.

Boundaries Training for the Leaders of our Synod!!
Approximately 75 rostered leaders from the Western Iowa Synod gathered together in Denison for a boundaries training. Boundary basics were discussed from being aware of our own needs as a leader to is this in the best interests of the other person or does it only satisfy my own needs. Other topics discussed were:
  • Sexualized Behavior; (verbal) sexual humor, teasing, tales of sexual exploits, suggestive comments about appearance, dress, etc.
  • Social Media and the church - boundaries to be aware of
  • Self Care
  • Relationships with congregational members
  • ELCA Policy for retired pastors - leaving the community and disconnecting from the church
  • and much more!!
Administrative Assistants Gather Together!!
Approximately 20 Administrative professionals gathered at the Western Iowa Synod office on Wednesday for the Spring Fling gathering. Our guest speaker was April McAfee from St Paul's in Atlantic. She shared with us how her past experience as a hairdresser and as a mom, has helped her in showing hospitality to all those who come into their church. We also discussed the difference between Service vs Hospitality. Service is what you do to someone and Hospitality is how you make them feel. Here's a quote that was shared: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel…..” How do you make the people you encounter each day feel? A Facebook group has been created for congregational administrative assistants and communicators. You can find that group by clicking here!!

Coming to Omaha/Council Bluffs!! - Teaching Fish to Walk
Teaching Fish To Walk: Church Systems and Adaptive Challenges, by Peter L. Steinke © 2016 Paperback (155 pgs)

Friday, May 5th, 9AM-3PM

  • New Horizon Presbyterian Church, 30 Valley View Road, Council Bluffs, IA 51503 OR

Saturday, May 6th, 9AM-2:30PM

  • Presbyterian Church of the Cross, 1517 S 114th Street, Omaha, NE 68144

WHY? With massive shifts in society, the American church has come upon adaptive challenges. Steinke urges churches to use change and conflict as opportunities for learning. Living with the promises of God, the church can imagine and explore ways to be more suitable in a new context.

WHAT? Rev. Steinke will expand on the content of his new book (same title) and demonstrate on how to use the book for study with church leaders. We will look at adaptive challenges facing the church in the light of emotional systems.

WHO? Rev. Steinke is an author of more than a dozen books. He’s an internationally respected congregational systems consultant who has also served as a parish pastor, an educator, and a therapist for clergy. Drawing on the work of family-systems expert Edwin Friedman, Peter's accessible books have helped countless congregations understand their hidden workings and use that understanding to become healthy and vital.
