It's Time to Stand Up
Dear advocates and ministry partner,s

Now is the time to take a stand for our neighbors across Iowa. Federal legislation that would profoundly alter Medicaid and put many of the people LSI serves at risk of losing services is moving quickly through the U.S. legislature. Please act now by contacting the state and federal legislators listed below.

As you may know, new legislation has been proposed to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Part of this legislation would restructure Medicaid to a per-capita system that does not allow for adequate enrollment growth, dramatically shrinking it over time. It would be particularly devastating for Medicaid expansion states like Iowa.

This legislation is being fast-tracked and could be up for a vote in the U.S. Senate by June 30. (The U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the legislation on May 4.) It is critical that we act today - and every day - until this legislation is defeated or altered. Please join LSI in this urgent advocacy.

Pastor Jerry Collell to begin FreeIndeed New Start July 17
We are excited to welcome Pastor Jerry Collell and his wife Nancy to the Southeastern Iowa Synod. Pastor Collell's ministry will begin on Monday, July 17 at the Anamosa State Penitentiary.

He writes: "I feel like FreeIndeed in Anamosa State Penitentiary is what God has been shaping me for since High School in Redmond, Oregon where parish ministry was first suggested by the pastor and other members of Zion Lutheran Church. I was an MP and worked in the Fort Ord stockade; got an MA in Special Education; directed residential treatment of delinquent and emotionally disturbed adolescents; got my MDiv in Berkely, CA; pastored three years in Oregon's Capitol, six years in the California mountains, three in their vineyards, and the last fifteen in Washington - the geographic center of the "none zone."

ELCA Youth Gathering Volunteers

Would you like to volunteer at the Gathering and help our young people grow in faith and encounter Christ? Serving the youth of this church is a vocational calling that requires careful discernment. Every volunteer must agree to follow the terms of a volunteer code of conduct and submit to a background check by the ELCA. There are four volunteer categories: local volunteers, community life, gathering volunteer corps, and servant companions. The responsibilities vary, and all volunteers (except local volunteers) must commit to being in Houston for one week. Volunteers arrive on Monday, June 25, 2018 and depart Sunday, July 1, 2018.

God's Work, Our Hands Sunday
"God's work. Our hands."  Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America - one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. The suggested date for the 2017 dedicated day of service is Sunday, Sept. 10. Mark your calendars today! If your congregation cannot participate on this date, please consider another day.

Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ - every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life - flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God's grace.

You work every day to make your community a better place. Let us continue doing this work together in 2017! For more resources please click the button below.

Pray for missionaries, evangelists, leaders developing new congregations and ministries, and all disciples of Christ who toil to share the good news and hope we have in Jesus Christ that we are welcomed wherever they serve, sustained in their faith, equipped to face challenges, and supported in their work.

Stewardship: "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows." -Matthew 10:29-31

All things on God's green earth are accounted for, from the sparrow to the hair on your head (which may be more for some than others!). As people who treasure things, we can certainly understand keeping account of our belongings. What would it look like to think of our things as God's? How might we keep accounting differently if we live into the promise that God Loves us, sent Christ to be with us, and now entrusts us with the ministry to love and care for God's world?
