"God's Work. Our Hands. Sunday less than month away
“God’s work. Our hands.”  is Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015. This dedicated day of service builds on the work ELCA congregations do every day, serving the communities in which we live. Whether we clean up outdoor spaces, fill back-packs with much-needed school supplies or write letters to soldiers and veterans, “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday celebrates who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America — one church, freed in Christ to love and serve our neighbor.

If you haven’t done so already, please sign up your congregation for the day of service.

Need help planning? Find new resources such as a study guide designed for congregations to discuss what it means to serve with a joyful heart. You’ll also find the 2015 version of the toolkit, bulletin inserts, posters and a new worship resource for your dedicated day of service.

Do you want to get the word out about your congregation’s activities? The toolkit includes a special section about sharing your congregation’s activities with your local newspaper, television and radio outlets.

We want to hear from you! Shortly after Sept. 13, please share stories about your congregation’s participation. Send your stories and photos to Val Harlynn, and, we'll feature them on our website and synod publications!

Mark your calendars today, but if it’s not possible for your congregation to participate on Sept. 13, please consider another day. For more information or questions email

Fall Theological Conference
The annual Southeastern Iowa Synod Fall Theological Conference will be held September 27-29, 2015, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames.  The theme will be “Being Public in the Name of Jesus.”  A speaker for this year’s event will be Rozella White, Program Director for Young Adult Ministries for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We are pleased to announce that Pr. Jason Chesnut from Baltimore, Maryland, and the founder of "The Slate Project" will team with Rozella White as the speakers for the Fall Theological Conference.
Here is a short description of the theme: “Christendom is waning and that might be a good thing! The love of Christ frees us to serve our neighbors and neighborhoods. But our neighbors aren’t coming to church all that much anymore. So the locus of work might need to shift from the sanctuary to the public square. Together we will explore ways to make this move into the public square as congregations and as leaders.” We will not be providing childcare for the 2015 Fall Theological Conference. Mobility and dietary restrictions will be accommodated to best of of our abilities. Register online
