Weekly Notes From Madison Youth Choirs
Thursday, May 18, 2017
We couldn't be more proud of our singers or more grateful to our committed families for making this season so memorable. Thank you for an amazing weekend of concerts!

Did you take pictures at our concerts on Sunday? We are always interested in seeing the concerts through your lens--if you're willing to share any images, please email Nicole.

What happens now? See below for a few end-of-season housekeeping items.
Turning in Music and Wardrobe
All MYC music should be removed from your singer's binder and returned to the MYC office. (Most has been returned--please double-check to see if your singer still has music.) Please include singer's name and ensemble when turning in music.

Cantabile & Ragazzi: your music will be returned after our June 3 concert at Holy Wisdom (we'll have bins available that day.)

Singers NOT returning to MYC next season, please return your concert wardrobe and your red MYC polo to the MYC office. All items should be clearly marked with your name--masking tape works well.

Everyone else: please wait until choir placements for next season are communicated (early June) to see if your wardrobe is changing before turning anything in.
2017-18 Season Intention Forms
We are still accepting singer intention forms and deposits for next season. Submitting your intention form ensures you will receive the time-sensitive 2017-18 placement and registration forms scheduled for delivery to families in early June. (Please email Lynn if you need this information resent to you.)

If your singer is eligible to audition, please submit your intention form and then reserve your audition time using the link below:
Tell Your Friends About MYC
Now is the time to let your friends know about either auditioning for a performing choir (grades 5-12) or enrolling in a summer introductory choir session (ages 7-10). All the information they need is on our website under the Join a Choir tab.

Concert CD's may be ordered directly from Audio for the Arts.

Heartland Youth Choir Visits in June
The Heartland Youth Choir from Des Moines, Iowa will perform an evening concert on Tuesday, June 13, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Middleton. Con Gioia will be joining them in song and we are looking forward to an amazing night of music and new friendships!

Con Gioia: Please check your calendars and let us know via the absence form if you have a conflict.

We are in need of families to provide home stays for 58 singers (21 boys and 37 girls in 5th through 8th grade) following the concert through breakfast on Wednesday morning. Please consider opening your home to host two or more singers overnight on Tuesday, June 13.

All MYC families are invited to host!

The Handel Aria Competition

The Handel Aria Competition is pleased to announce the finalists for this year’s 5th annual event. The final round of the competition will be presented as a public concert on Friday, June 9, at 7:30 in Mills Hall of the Humanities Building, University of Wisconsin-Madison Mead Witter School of Music.

MYC singers and parents are invited to request a complimentary ticket by emailing handelariacompetition@gmail.com at least 48 hours in advance of June 9. These tickets are generously provided by Dean and Orange Schroeder, the founders of this competition and long-time friends of Madison Youth Choirs. Tickets for the general public are $15 and will be available at the door.

This year’s finalists, chosen from a field of over 100 singers from around the world, are:

  • Johanna Bronk, mezzo-soprano from Boston, MA
  • Brian Giebler, tenor from New York, NY
  • Nicole Heinen, soprano from New Orleans, LA
  • Clara Osowski, mezzo-soprano from Brooklyn Center, MN
  • Andrew Rader, countertenor from Bloomington, IN
  • Gene Stenger, tenor from New Haven CT
  • Nian Wang, mezzo-soprano from Nanjing, China

Each singer will present two arias, accompanied by the Madison Bach Musicians under the direction of Trevor Stephenson.  Three professional judges will select a first, second and third prize winner, and all those in attendance will be invited to vote for the recipient of the “audience favorite” prize.

The Handel Aria Competition was established in 2013 by Dean and Carol “Orange” Schroeder, enthusiasts of the vocal repertoire of George Frideric Handel. The purpose of the competition is to encourage emerging singers of all voice types to explore the repertoire of Handel.
