Lunch and Learn – Understanding the Complexity and Implications of Racism
In an effort to continue understanding the complexity and implications of racism, the Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), invited congregations to participate in webcasts with William B. Horne II, a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Clearwater, Fla., and a member of the ELCA Church Council, serving as host. Eaton and Horne have had three on-camera conversations about the church’s efforts in defining and confronting racism, advancing racial justice and more. “Talking about race and racism is hard work for most of us,” said Horne. “Our Christian witness compels us to confront our sinfulness in all forms from within and outside of ourselves. It is more beneficial if we do it together.”

July 7 and 14, 2016; 11:30 – 1:00 at the Synod Center for Ministry in Iowa City.

Bring a sack lunch and watch presiding bishop Eaton’s webcasts on confronting racism with conversation to follow.  This is a two-part series. RSVP here

Churchwide News
Word and Service roster unification
This summer a recommendation will come to the Churchwide Assembly to unite the present three lay rosters of Associates in Ministry, Deaconesses and Diaconal Ministers into one roster of Word and Service. Beginning in 2007, a series of consultations, study and dialogue began to examine the work and ministry of these three lay rosters. These conversations led the ELCA Church Council to form the Word and Service Task Force. The task force determined the central question is whether the mission of the ELCA would be strengthened by combining the three lay rosters into one.
Find out more about this recommendation through the Word and Service Task Force Frequently Asked Questions. Learn more.
Called Forward Together in Christ: A process to decide the ELCA’s future directions
As we anticipate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, people across this church are reflecting on our history and thinking about our future. What kind of church is God calling us to become? How does the ELCA continue to be an inspiring and relevant church in our communities? Called Forward Together in Christ, an initiative led by Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and other leaders, invites your congregation and synod to take part in the conversation this spring. Practice Discipleship Initiative
Join us for our first Practice Discipleship offering June 11 at Faith Lutheran in Eldridge from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as we engage in Wondering Through Service Learning and Wondering in Prayer. Training is FREE! Lunch is provided ($5 per person). Register for the June 11 training online.

Wondering through Service Learning – Service learning moves service projects and mission trips from one-time events to experiences that open minds and hearts to new ways of thinking and acting. For example, youth might ponder tough questions about poverty in your hometown, notice the incredible artistry within God's creation, or glimpse the wisdom of a senior citizen in a simple conversation. By emphasizing adequate preparation, intentional reflection, and sharing stories with others, service experiences can be brought to life in profound, astonishing ways. (written by Mark Jackson, Professor & Chair of Children, Youth & Family Studies, Director, Center for Community Engagement, Trinity Lutheran College)

Wondering in Prayer – We teach children the Lord’s Prayer and prayers for meals and bedtimes, and we often teach children how to pray for friends and family. We often stop there. But we are called to worship God with all of heart and soul
and mind. So, in this session we will explore prayer forms that engage the senses and the imagination, opening a space for us both to dwell and to wonder in God. (written by Dr. Mindy Makant, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, Lenoir-Rhyne University)
