It has been some time since our last Partners for Life newsletter in August 2008. Since then we regretfully said goodbye to our Associate Director, Laureen Bodnar, who was our staff liaison with Partners for Life churches. We have felt her loss keenly in this area of PPL's work.
We trust that you have received other mailings and emails from PPL and have not felt neglected. We value your partnership with us in bringing a pro-life witness to the PC(USA) more than ever as we face a darkening future for life issues in our nation.
Within the next week both the inauguration of our new President and the March for Life will occur in Washington D.C. Presbyterians have always held the view that it is important for the Church to speak to government and the culture. On the issue of abortion, those of us who are pro-life disagree with the PC(USA) on what that message ought to be. That makes it all the more important that we speak out as pro-life individuals and churches on behalf of pre-born lives.
|We need prayerful proclaimation! |
In just a few days, President Elect, Barack Obama will be inaugurated as the President of the United States. These are historic days for America as we welcome our first African-American President. Many pro-life leaders have written apprehensively about what this presidency will mean for the pre-born. Wesley J. Smith, CBC special consultant predicts "A Dark Year for Ethical Bioethics in 2009".
The Incoming President has made it no secret that he would support a Freedom of Choice Act. Charles Colson of Breakpoint says America has chosen a "March of Death". He describes what FOCA would do if enacted.
It has never been more important for pro-life churches to become actively engaged in speaking out against abortion to our government. Our new President and our legislators, need to hear from you and I that many PC(USA) members want to see protection for pre-born human life and that most want at least some restrictions on abortion.
FOCA will, in essence, eliminate most restrictions on abortion. Parental notification, informed consent, conscientious objection on behalf of healthcare providers, restrictions on late-term abortions, could well be things of the past. Not for nothing did the Catholic Bishops describe FOCA as "the most radical and extreme abortion legislation ever considered in the United States.
PPL has never been focused on political advocacy. We have seek to bring a reformed theology to bear on the disagreement over life issues within the PC(USA). We have worked to educate congregations and to equip pastors and lay leaders for ministry surrounding the issues of abortion, euthanasia, sexuality, the family and emerging biotechnology.
We do, however, encourage you as individuals and as pro-life congregations to become involved in the politics of human life and family and speak out often and strongly.
Remember to pray for all those in government as scripture instructs us to do. This amazing video may provide inspiration.
