Did you know?

  • Although three species of bears inhabit North America, only the black bear can be found in Pennsylvania.

  • Did you know that Black Bears are most active this time of year?

  • Black Bears mate during early June – mid July.

  • Black bears are very agile, can run up to 35 mph, climb trees and swim well.

  • Despite their common name, black bears are not always black. They may be cinnamon-colored, blond or black. Often they have a white spot or on their chest.

  • Males are called boars; females, sows.

Two Centre County organizations will benefit from the 2015 “Get Outdoors PA” Mini-Grant program through the PA Recreation and Park Society!  Millbrook Marsh Nature Center, operated by the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority, was awarded a $1,500 matching grant to assist with equipment for Introduction to Kayaking programs. Equipment to be purchased includes kayaks, paddles, and life vests. Programs are schedule to begin in 2016 serving residents age 15 and older.  Intro to Kayaking will be held in the controlled environment of Welch Community Swimming Pool to provide a safe setting for new kayakers to get used to the feel of the boat and learn to safely exit their boats.

ClearWater Conservancy also received a $1,300 grant to help fund equipment needed to expand capacity of its Adventures in Conservation series to include Stream Exploration events. These outdoor events will educate children and adults about healthy streams, what lives in and around them and the need for land and water conservation. For more about ClearWater and its programs, click here.

Ten organizations from across the state were selected for this inaugural round of grant funding.  “Get Outdoors PA” strives to connect citizens with outdoor recreation activities to increase their appreciation and active use of parks, forests and public spaces while imparting a message of environmental stewardship and healthy living. “Get Outdoors PA” is part of the PA Department of Natural Resources and its partners.
