Rabbi Cy Stanway

These past few weeks have been a whirlwind of events in my life.  The death of my father, the shiva, the election of President-elect Donald Trump and the subsequent controversies about his cabinet choices, the arrival of my daughter Naomi from her year-long tikkun olam work in Rwanda and the day to day responsibilities of serving the congregation have made my November the most eventful month in a long, long time.  And to think that the Hebrew month of MarCheshvan is, according to the Hebrew calendar, the most non-eventful month in the year!

But Cheshvan is over and, though there is a unique emptiness in my life and possibly in the lives of many of you, we have an opportunity to come together in our celebration of Hannukah.

Our rabbis have wondered why the Hannukiah, the Hannukah menorah, is lit from one candle to eight as opposed from eight to one.  After all, it makes sense to count down as the festival progresses.  There was a small discussion about the rabbis and the conclusion was that we light an extra one every night because Judaism is a faith that seeks to increase the light when possible, no diminish it.  I love that idea.

The darkness is always followed by the light and through and with community the light completely replaces the darkness.  It is time to celebrate as a community and to affirm our Jewish values which is what Hannukah is about.  It is our time to affirm our value of religious freedom and the struggles to maintain it for ourselves and support the struggles of others for what we demand of ourselves.  It is our time to affirm that individual acts of respect and love and acceptance will have profound effects on the lives of those we interact with and that, in reality, no one and no institution has power over our thoughts and faith.  Hannukah is a time to affirm not only our Judaism but to bring the increasing light into hearts that are often dark.

I hope that you will share with us our Hannukah dinner and service on Friday, December 30 and celebrate with light and food and come together as a community and share our faith in the light that will permeate all the darknesses.  And, as you celebrate with your families and friends, may you feel the warmth of family, the joy of the light of your lives and the flavors that bring laughter and happiness into your lives.

May you increase the light in all you do and all your are.  Chag Hannukah Sameach!  A Joyous Hannukah!

Our Rummage Sale was a great success.  We made over $5,000 minus expenses of advertising, food, maintenance and supplies.  We also will be adding the proceeds of two paintings donated by David  Nussbaum when they are bought!

Thank you to Rabbi Cy, Stella Stanway, Harry Silverman, Shari Nightingale and Frankie Langer for their help in “getting the word out”.  I must thank Al Fried for his hours of “administrative” skills to me!  Thanks to Tello and Rosey for being there for us.

Whether you worked an hour or came in every day for the nine days we thank you so much.  A special thanks to the men who helped set up and break down - it’s appreciated.  And to our security team!  You did great.

A special thanks to our “Temple friends “ Jean, Toni, Susan and Lela who sold over $800 in our jewelry boutique!  Our request for jewelry from the congregation certainly paid off.  And many thanks to Greg and Emilia for their continued help and to Tim for picking up the bikes!

Our boutique made over $1,000 and our “new” gift department made $200.  IT ALL ADDS UP!

To those who could not help but made donations of clothing, etc. we thank you.  Can’t do it without “STUFF”.  To those who were unable to help this year, we missed you and see you next year!

At the end of our sale our Boutique is donated to Jersey Shore University Medical Center Thrift Shop.  Coats, jackets, sweats and anything warm are donated to our Youth Group’s Midnight Run to the homeless in Asbury Park.  SPCA gets blankets and pillows and books were donated to an organization.  A Trenton mission picked up thirty clothing bags for the needy!

Happy Holidays, be well, and see you next year!

High Holiday Food Drive

Thanks to everyone for your generous donations to the High Holiday Food Drive. We collected 140 bags of food this year (approximately 1400 pounds) and $220 in donations. The food was split between the pantries at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in WLB and the Mercy Center in AP. Both pantries were very grateful for the generosity of everyone. The money is being used to help both pantries complete their Thanksgiving baskets for their clients and again is greatly appreciated. Thanks to the sisterhood for the donation of the bags and for help stapling the flyers. Thanks to the youth you helped with the bags and handed them out after services. And a very special thanks to Tim and Beth Knotts (pictured below) who stepped up and offered their truck to collect the food and made the deliveries to the two pantries.

Thank you to TBM’s Wonderful Volunteers

Thank you to those people who provided and coordinated refreshments for the minyans at TBM for Rabbi Cy’s father. A big thank you to Rabbi Brooks Susman and Cantor Marnie for conducting the minyans and to Tello for his help setting up and in the kitchen.

Thank you to all that provided and sponsored onegs last month, including Susan Stone & Tom Gavin for providing in honor of Sophie's Bat Mitzvah, and the grandparents of Elena Fisher for providing in honor of her Bat Mitzvah. Thank you to Ilene & Bob Kellert for sponsoring this month. Thank you to Debbie Gerbman and the Sisterhood for always stepping up and helping out with our onegs.

Special thanks to Tim and Beth Knotts as they took time out of their busy schedules to demonstrate the use of the temple’s defibrillator.  They demonstrated its use as part of a board meeting and to our High Holiday ushers to refresh our knowledge.
