Synod News
Renew, Refresh, Breathe
Good news for rostered and program leaders in the Southeastern Iowa Synod -registration for the April 13 – 14, 2015 Breathe Event (including the Monday night hotel) will now be provided free of charge for rostered leaders and program ministry staff of congregations of the Southeastern Iowa Synod.Understanding the importance of health and wellness among our leaders, funds have been made available to cover the cost for up to 100 registrants.  Healthy leaders enhance entire communities, bringing their best selves to Christ’s mission.

  • Afternoon sessions will be facilitated by Life Coach, Diana Gabriel with a focus on Building Resiliency in Church Leaders, helping people reach their highest potential.  Resiliency is needed for leaders to thrive vs. survive in these times of rapid change.  It is the bounce back factor needed for agility, adaptability, and equilibrium under pressure; helping us to operate and lead from our strengths, values and purpose.

  • Worship led by Hans Petersen.   He is a solo artist and a member of the Dakota Road band.
  •  Down time late Monday afternoon and evening; an opportunity to relax and breathe, dinner with colleagues, or read.

Learn more about the event and register on the synod's website. Questions? Contact the Southeastern Iowa Synod at 319-338-1273
Has your spouse taken the health assessment yet?
We’re slightly behind last year’s pace. We need spouses’ help! New this year, spouses on the ELCA health plan must create their own myPortico account in order to complete the Mayo Clinic health assessment.

If you have a spouse on the ELCA health plan, remind him or her to register for a spousal myPortico account and complete the health assessment. The steps are simple:
1.      Ask your spouse to locate his or her Portico “Member ID” and “SVC.” These were mailed to each spouse in February, and will be again in March. If you cannot locate these numbers, spouses (not members) can obtain them over the phone by calling 800.352.2876, Portico’s Customer Care Center. (Spouses need to use their own Member ID and SVC to create an account, not the member’s.)

2.      With these two numbers in hand, have your spouse go to, select the “Register Now” button, and follow the online instructions to register.

3.      Once registered, sign in to myPortico and select the “Go to Mayo Clinic Healthy Living” button to complete the health assessment, and to begin follow-up activities to earn all $500 wellness dollars.

Remember, the deadline to reach the 65% goal is April 30! Thank you for taking this proactive step to enhance our synod’s financial stewardship, and the health and well-being of our leaders and families!

ELCA World Hunger Education and Networking Grants
The ELCA World Hunger Education and Networking grants program is designed to support local programs in ELCA congregations, groups and/or synods. The grant opportunity encourages ELCA congregation, groups and/or synods to think creatively about educating, mobilizing, and expanding their networks to increase awareness of the root causes of and solutions to hunger.

Education grants can be used for events, educational programs or the development of shareable resources. For networking proposals, congregation-based and synod-based hunger leader events and trainings will be prioritized. For more information visit the ELCA World Hunger blog.

World Malaria Sunday
World Malaria Day is observed internationally on April 25. Congregations are encouraged to celebrate Wold Malaria Sunday, April 26. Together, we have already raised over 90 percent of our goal. If we join together during this special time, we have the opportunity to reach the $15 million mark. Our goal by the end of World Malaria Week is that we will have raised $1 million, enough to fully fund the rest of our country programs.

Find special World Malaria Day resources to help celebrate the day.

A Framework for Understanding Poverty
Is poverty a problem in your community? Interested in helping but you don't know where to start?

The first step to helping make a difference in the lives of people living in poverty is to understand the obstacles they encounter everyday. This insight can help provide the support others need to break the cycle of generational poverty.

To learn more about the effects of living in poverty and what you can do to help, attend A Framework for Understanding Poverty on Saturday, April 18 in Marshalltown, IA. Using Ruby Payne’s  book, Bridges out of Poverty, as a reference this 7-hour course is designed to give participants insight into the challenges that people face to improve their lives.

This event is sponsored by the Southeastern Iowa Synod and the Marshall County ELCA Hunger Ministries Team. Click here for more information and to register.

Our food choices are connected to climate change. When we sit down to dinner, we may not think about global warming, but as much as one third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions are connected to our food system. Each of us, at every meal, can make a real difference that ensures a more climate-friendly food system.

Iowa Interfaith Power and Light, and interfaith environmental group, is offerings its Food, Faith, and Climate workshop, on Monday, April 27, 7:00-8:30pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 3707 Eastern Ave, Davenport. The cost is $20. Register online.
