Gospel for this coming Sunday
Matthew 5:1-12
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Pre-Gathering Opportunities for Youth

The Multicultural Youth Leadership Event is a pre-event to the Gathering. It empowers young people of color and those whose primary language is other than English to claim their story as a part of God's story. MYLE 2018 will be held June 24–27, 2018.
MYLE’s core values include:
  • Culture is explored. Participants will experience an inclusive community that seeks to build understanding and appreciation of the various cultures and ethnicities that are a part of this church.
  • Leaders are formed. Youth and adults will learn about the issues in their communities and how to effect change.
  • Identity is claimed. Participants will be encouraged to uncover their story and live out their God-given calling in the world.
  • Faith is deepened. Youth and adults will explore the intersection of faith and life and how our faith calls us to act justly in the world.
  • Friends are made. Participants will connect with peers who are looking to build relationships and have a good time.

The tAble (formerly the Definitely-abled Youth Leadership Event or DAYLE) is a pre-event to the Gathering that blesses and empowers young people who live with a wide range of physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities so that they might grow as faithful, wise and courageous witnesses. The event also gives participants the opportunity to acclimate and orient themselves to Houston and the venues in which the Gathering are being held.
The tAble will gather under the theme: You Belong. A sense of “belonging” is not always a truth that the world and culture extend. We continuously wonder “where do I fit in?”, “why am I different than others?”, “what gifts could I possibly bring?”. And yet, we are reminded in Psalm 139, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” We are made – wonderfully – by the very God who names us and claims us as children. We belong to God! At The tAble: we believe in the promise that we all, and therefore, YOU belong – to God, at Christ’s Table, within the church, and, within our communities.
The tAble is open to youth ages 14-18 or engaged in a high school youth group or enrolled in high school or the vocational education equivalent. Youth who attend the tAble must be accompanied by an adult companion.
The tAble will be held June 24–27, 2018. The cost for the tAble is $190 per person (including caretakers) and includes all housing, program and some food expenses during the tAble. Caretakers who register for to attend the tAble will not be charged registration fees for the Gathering. More info here!

If you have any multicultural youth that would benefit from attending this event or the tABLE please let Lynn know. Bishop Prois is willing to drive down with youth for both pre-event activities!! Scholarship dollars are available for these two events.

Urge Congress: Support Palestinian unity; end the Gaza blockade
Last week the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and the Hamas authorities in Gaza signed a reconciliation deal to end the decade of division between the two groups. The text of the agreement has not been released, but the goal of the deal, as stated by both sides, is to reunite the West Bank and Gaza under the control of the Palestinian Authority, while reconciling the divisions between the political factions.
The new agreement is an important first step toward change in Gaza and a necessary move before larger issues between Palestinians and Israelis can be addressed. More information and ways you can take action can be found here!!
