Conference of Bishops
February 28 - March 6, 2018
Reported by Bishop Rodger Prois
Our first piece of pre-conference business was to meet as regions to work through the assignment of candidates for first call vacancies. There were 282 vacancies through out the 9 regions, with 68 unrestricted candidates available. Region 5 had 64 of those vacancies and 22 candidates were assigned to our region. Western Iowa has 4 possible first call sites and we were assigned one candidate. Prayers for that soon to be pastor are appreciated.
Region 5 Bishops also discussed our relationships with the seminaries in the region and changes that are occurring.
The various committees of the Conference met following lunch. I sit on the Domestic Mission: New and Renewing Committee and we heard of staff realignment in the unit and an intentional refocusing on Congregational Vitality. More on this will be announced soon.
We then gathered for eucharist worship in the Lutheran Center Chapel. Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton presided and Bp. Ray Tiemann, SW TX, preached. The Youth Core Leadership Team joined us for worship. The Team is composed of twelve high school youth from across the ELCA who have been identified as leaders in congregations and/or synods, and who desire the opportunity to dig more deeply into their own leadership...full document here.
