The Rev. Jack H. Kahle
December 9, 1949 – December 27, 2016
Pastor Jack H. Kahle died December 27, 2016 at the age of 67. He was born in Chicago, IL and attended University of Illinois, Chicago (1968-1970), Lutheran Bible Institute, Seattle (1970-1972), and did field work in Youth Ministry at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Moscow, ID (1972-73). He then attended Northwest College, Kirkland, WA (1973-74), where he earned his BA in Religion and Philosophy. He attended Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA, and earned his Masters of Divinity. He was ordained in August 1978.
His first call was to St. James Lutheran Church, Garden City, KS, where he served until 1983. He then served at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Omaha, NE (1983-1992), Grace Lutheran Church, Ft. Dodge, IA (1994-1999), the Western Iowa Synod (1999-2005), St. Peter Lutheran Church, Pocahontas, IA (2005-2010). He retired in 2013, and moved to Woodland, CA to be near his daughter and her family.
Pastor Jack was trained in conflict management and took joy in helping churches heal challenges and move through transitions. He also served the communities in which he lived as a hospice and police chaplain and in advocacy organizations for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, including as President of the Board of Directors for Domestic/Sexual Assault Outreach Center, Fort Dodge, IA, 2006 - 2009.
He was an active member of American Lutheran Church of Woodland, serving there as pastor on call and supply, choir, praise team and on the Mutual Ministry Committee. He enjoyed working with children and the events for Youth and Family Ministry at ALC. He was a gifted musician, writing music and volunteering his skills as a guitarist and singer. He loved life’s simple joys: good coffee, sweet corn from summer farm stands, and cooking for family and friends.
Pastor Jack is survived by his daughter, Sarah Kahle Kuipers, his son-in-law Chris Kahle Kuipers, and his granddaughter Elsa. He is also survived by his brother Jim and sister-in-law Jean, his sister Linda and brother-in-law Rob Fischer, and eight nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2017, 10:00 a.m., at American Lutheran Church of Woodland. Memorials may be given in Jack’s honor to American Lutheran’s Youth and Family Fund.
