Remember in Prayer
For people who are grieving losses and recovering from earthquakes, tornadoes, flooding and natural disasters, we pray for relief, resources for rebuilding communities and the life-giving hope that comes with faith in God’s presence and love.

Youth and adults from St. John Lutheran Church Bliedorn in Grand Mound, Iowa visited the Synod Center for Ministry on Friday, June 12th as part of a larger confirmation trip. The group had time to tour the center, meet the candidacy committee, learn about the candidacy process and had time to ask question about ministries around the synod.

Confirmation classes or interest groups are welcome to visit and learn about the ministries of the synod. Call the Southeastern Iowa Synod Center for Ministry 319-338-1273 to set up a time for your class or group.

New grant process supports ELCA youth and young adult ministries
Expanding ministries among youth and young adults is a priority for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). To help cultivate young leaders, embrace a culture of diversity and inclusion and build a robust network of support, a new grant process is now available to support this church's priority.

The grant process is part of Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA – a five-year campaign approved by the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. It seeks to raise $198 million by Jan. 31, 2019, in support of new and existing churchwide ministries above and beyond those supported by regular weekly offerings. The goal for the ELCA Youth and Young Adults priority is $4 million.

"The new grant process allows innovative thinkers within the church to partner with congregations to apply for funding to give their creative ideas legs," according to Ian McConnell, a student at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. Luther is one of eight ELCA seminaries. Read more...
Meet James and Joseph - The Lutheran malaria program in Uganda
My name is Opus James. I serve as a VHT (a member of a Village Health Team) in Kamenu Parish in Katakwi, Uganda. I serve three villages: Aputon, Apeleu and Atapar.

As part of my work, I screen people for malaria. If someone is sick, they must get treatment within twenty-four hours, in order for the treatment to be most effective.  So when I visit with a sick child or adult [and they test positive for malaria], I treat them immediately using Coartem [first-line medication for treating malaria]. If the person has a severely high fever, I refer them to a government health clinic. Read more...
