Upcoming administration workshops
Administration and finance are important to the health of your congregation. Having a firm grasp on your congregation’s finances will have a positive impact on your local ministry; as well as the ministries that we do together as the ELCA. And understanding your congregation’s tax and reporting responsibilities will ensure that you remain in good standing as a non-profit corporation.

The Southeastern Iowa Synod is offering four workshops to help with administration and finance in your congregation. These workshops are provided at no cost to congregations of the Southeastern Iowa Synod.  Pre-registration is encouraged. See the full list of dates and times.

For questions, or to register contact Kathy Smith, Associate for Administration,, 319-338-1273.
Portico transferring to Liberty Mutual for disability benefits
As part of its ongoing efforts to provide ELCA benefits that enhance the well-being of those we serve, Portico is changing the administrator of its disability benefits from Aetna to Liberty Mutual. The transition will be effective June 1, 2015.

We’re working closely with Liberty Mutual and Aetna, and are communicating the transition to plan members now receiving disability benefits to help ensure uninterrupted benefit payments and service.

Please note that the benefits provided by the ELCA Disability Benefits Plan, current monthly member disability benefit payments, and 2015 monthly employer contributions are not changing.

Member Action Required
To help manage plan members’ claims and ensure uninterrupted delivery of monthly disability payments, Liberty Mutual will send forms to ELCA members currently receiving disability benefits. Members will need to mail or fax completed forms to Liberty Mutual by June 1, 2015. If mailing, members may want to have the forms postmarked by May 26 to ensure that Liberty Mutual receives them by June 1. If you have any questions about this transition, please contact the Portico Benefits Customer Care Center 800.352.2876

Bishop Elizabeth Eaton meets with church leaders in China
In her first visit to China, the Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), noted the importance of cooperation in deepening the relationship with Christians in China, and the ELCA’s methodology of “accompaniment is how we can relate.”

In an April 1 meeting with the Rev. Gao Feng, president of the China Christian Council in Shanghai, Eaton said that “most American Christians and Lutherans would be surprised by the large Christian presence in China.”

According to Feng, there have been 40,000 to 50,000 baptisms each year since 2012, with a total of more than 25 million Protestant believers. “The church faces many challenges with the rapid growth we are experiencing,” he said. “The church needs to train more pastors and lay workers together with meeting social needs,” he told Eaton. Grace Institute for Spiritual Formation
The Spiritual Formation Program of Grace Institute is designed to immerse participants in core Christian spiritual practices. It is an ELCA Lifelong Learning Partners (Continuing Education) program.

Our main goals are deeper personal spiritual formation and development of skills in leading small groups in spiritual practices.

Since the program does not train people to be spiritual directors, our focus is not on one-to-one listening, but on listening and leading in small groups.

The Spiritual Formation Program brings the same people together four times a year for two years. Participants sign up for all eight sessions. Apply by June 15, 2015. Learn more
