New bi-annual newsletter now available 
The Winter 2015 issue of the Southeastern Iowa Synod's new bi-annual newsletter is here!  This new publication is geared toward sharing stories of the Holy Spirit's work among and through us, shaping our life together. The newsletter will be published in August and February, and will reflect the annual theme launched each year at Synod Assembly.

2015 Health Assessment is now open
It is that time of year again and Portico is once again offering synods the opportunity to earn a 2% discount on ELCA health contributions this year if our synod has at least 65% participation in the health assessment. 

Portico health plan primary members and eligible spouses can take the health assessment by signing into MyPortico. Those who participate by taking the health assessment will also earn $150 in wellness dollars. Sign in to MyPortico for more information.

Cuba: ELCA leaders welcome renewing relations
Lauding the decision by the Obama administration to reinstate diplomatic ties with Cuba, the Rev. Rafael Malpica Padilla, executive director for ELCA Global Mission, said the move may lead to the reunification of families and follows more than 25 years of encouragement by the ELCA to normalize relations between the two countries. ELCA World Hunger's Walk for Water 
This year, ELCA youth will join together to do something big, called ELCA World Hunger's Walk for Water. The goal is to raise $500,000 for ELCA World Hunger supported water projects around the world. 

Through these gifts, local communities will be equipped to provide water for drinking and growing crops, sanitation and hygiene, as well as ongoing health education, training and maintenance.

This year, CTIM is excited to welcome Dr. Troy Troftgruben, assistant professor at Wartburg Theological Seminary, as the keynote speaker. Troy will engage and inspire conference participants around the topic - what it means to be people of the Spirit. Companions in Christ
Companion Synod/Diocese Celebration
All are welcome to attend the Companion Synod/Diocese Celebration on Saturday, April 18 at Faith Lutheran Church in Clive. Participants will learn about the companion relationship between the Pare Diocese and the Southeastern Iowa Synod. Along with Bishop Michael Burk, the keynote speakers for this year’s event are Bishop Charles Mjema and Pastor Nahana Mjema of the Pare Diocese. More information and registration can be found at
ConFest 2015

A high-impact, low-cost, event for junior high youth who are involved in confirmation ministry across the Southeastern Iowa Synod. We invite all middle school students and adult advisors to come and discover their place in God's Story!

Breathe: A Renewal Event
In the Southeastern Iowa Synod, we are intentional about health and wholeness among leaders and entire communities of faith. We are called to bring our best selves to the mission of Jesus Christ. Rostered leaders and ministry program staff are invited for a two-day retreat April 13-14. The primary goal of this event is for participants to relax, refresh, and breathe. Find more information here

Celebration of ordination
Michelle Kristine Kanzaki will be ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament on Monday, February 16 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Your prayers and presence are requested. All ordained, consecrated and commissioned ministers are invited to process. The liturgical color of the day is red. Reception to follow.
Brian McLaren to speak in Iowa City
What does it mean to embody the Spirit of Christ in today’s changing world as persons and as church? Public theologian Brian McLaren will give a talk “Living Christ on the Edge” Friday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m. This talk is free and open to the public. On Saturday, March 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Brian will present a workshop for lay and ordained leaders entitled “Following Jesus on the Way: Scripture, Spirituality, Mission”. This event is $25/person or $20 for groups of 4 or more. Both events will take place at Zion Lutheran Church, 310 N. Johnson in Iowa City

30 Hour Famine, March 6-8, Grades 6-12
Join us at Lutheran Lakeside Camp as we strive to learn more about hunger, grow together through fasting, raise awareness, and do service work. Start the weekend off Friday night with a big dinner before beginning our fast at Midnight, fast through Saturday, and on Sunday break the fast with a breakfast feast! Activities will be prepared using World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine Curriculum. Play the TRIBE game as we join the fight to end hunger!

Fireside Adult Retreat, March 13-15
Come to Lutheran Lakeside Camp in Spirit Lake, IA for relaxation, fellowship, and faith through worship, discussions, devotions, prayers, and time together. Join in on activities like bread making, mono printing, board games, wood carving, hiking, paracording, Skiing, wood burning, candy making, yoga, card games, and plenty of time to be by the fire! 

Lakeside Mission Trip, March 15-20, Age 16+
What better way to spend your Spring Break week than at Lutheran Lakeside Camp! Take a road trip with your favorite camp staff to the Des Moines Area where we will volunteer with Central Iowa Shelter and Services for the week!Sunday evening will be filled with get-to-know-you games and team building fun! Then enjoy our trip as we head out bright and early Monday morning! Work for the week and arrive back home on Friday with enough time to rest up before going back to classes.
