Remember in Prayer
We pray for the reassurance of God’s Spirit when we are tempted to think the church is dying in our society and culture. May we instead recognize signs of God’s presence and thriving word and trust God’s Spirit is active in the world.

Confronting Racism in the church, the country and southeastern Iowa
On August 6, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and William B. Horne II, an ELCA member from Clearwater, Fla., gathered for a live webcast conversation on the complexity and implications of racism. During the webcast, Bishop Eaton called upon congregations of the ELCA to gather for deep conversations about racism and racial justice, particularly in response to several events in the United States.

“Talking about race and racism is hard work for most of us,” says Horne. “Yet our Christian witness compels us to confront racism in all its forms.  It is more beneficial if we do it together.”

As you prepare to gather in your congregation, you are invited to engage the Southeastern Iowa Synod Anti-Racism Task Force to help facilitate the conversations. Task Force members have extensive faith based training and experience navigating these challenging conversations.  And have materials for sessions of varying lengths – adult forums through day-long workshops.

There are several upcoming events around the synod and media resources to help with this tough topic. For the full recorded webinar, resources, and a list of events click here.
Why are our health care costs going?
Join Portico Benefit Services for a look at what drives ELCA health contribution rates, such as market trends and our faith community’s use of care. This live, 30-minute webinar will include an opportunity to ask questions. Organizational decision-makers are invited to attend, such as congregation presidents, treasurers, senior pastors, or others who help shape their ministry’s budget.

“The campers were just so excited to give”- Iowa day camp raises support one dime at a time
At Christ Lutheran Church's week-long day camp program, "God moments" appeared as campers shared their gifts with the ELCA Malaria Campaign, which supports the work of the our Lutheran companions in 13 countries in Africa. The campers, parents, and volunteers at Christ Lutheran Church were particularly inspired by the stories shared by one staff member from Riverside Lutheran Bible Camp who is from Tanzania. She is serving on staff at Riverside Lutheran Bible Camp as part of an ELCA-sponsored international camp counselor exchange program. Riverside Lutheran Bible Camp is a Lutheran outdoor ministry located in Story City, IA. There are about 140 Lutheran outdoor ministry programs and camps across the United States.

Youth and Young Adults have played an important role in the ELCA Malaria Campaign, from children participating in "Catch the Buzz" VBS, to college students supporting robust efforts by Lutheran Campus Ministry. Read the rest...

Fall Theological Conference
The annual Southeastern Iowa Synod Fall Theological Conference will be held September 27-29, 2015, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames.  The theme will be “Being Public in the Name of Jesus.”  A speaker for this year’s event will be Rozella White, Program Director for Young Adult Ministries for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We are pleased to announce that Pr. Jason Chesnut from Baltimore, Maryland, and the founder of "The Slate Project" will team with Rozella White as the speakers for the Fall Theological Conference.
Here is a short description of the theme: “Christendom is waning and that might be a good thing! The love of Christ frees us to serve our neighbors and neighborhoods. But our neighbors aren’t coming to church all that much anymore. So the locus of work might need to shift from the sanctuary to the public square. Together we will explore ways to make this move into the public square as congregations and as leaders.” We will not be providing childcare for the 2015 Fall Theological Conference. Mobility and dietary restrictions will be accommodated to best of of our abilities. Register online
